The Centre for Migrant and Refugee Health (CMRH) is drawing urgent attention to a rapidly escalating public health emergency in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where a mystery disease has claimed the lives of 143 individuals in Kwango Province’s Panzi health zone between November 10 and 25, 2024. This outbreak, characterized by severe symptoms such as high fever, headaches, coughing, and anemia, poses a significant threat to vulnerable populations, including migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers across East Africa.
As healthcare systems in the region struggle to cope with this unprecedented crisis, the CMRH urges swift action to bolster disease surveillance, resource allocation, and cross-border collaboration to contain the spread and protect at-risk communities.
