This afternoon, our Project Coordinator, for New and Emerging Infectious Diseases – COVID-19 had the privilege of engaging with African Australian women in a crucial discussion on the importance of COVID-19 prevention and management, particularly during the festive season. The conversation centred on providing these women with practical knowledge and strategies to safeguard themselves, their families, and their communities against the ongoing pandemic.
The festive season, often a time of celebration and family gatherings, also presents challenges when it comes to maintaining health and safety measures. The project coordinator emphasized the need for personal responsibility in adhering to public health guidelines, including mask-wearing, social distancing, and the importance of vaccination. The key focus was not only on individual safety but also on collective responsibility to protect the broader community.
One of the central goals of the session was to empower the community, particularly women, by providing them with the tools and information needed to make informed health decisions. By engaging these women directly, the project sought to build their confidence in following COVID-19 health protocols, which they could then pass on to their families and social networks.
In addition to these informative discussions, the session also included well-wishes for the New Year 2023, hoping that all participants would have a healthy and prosperous year ahead. The gathering fostered a sense of hope and resilience, reminding the participants of the importance of community support during challenging times.
This important initiative is part of a broader effort funded by FECCA (Federation of Ethnic Communities’ Councils of Australia), in collaboration with the Federal Government Department of Health Australia, aimed at supporting multicultural communities in navigating the complexities of the COVID-19 pandemic. By focusing on culturally sensitive communication and community engagement, the project strives to reduce the impact of COVID-19 in African Australian communities, ensuring that they are not left behind in the fight against the pandemic.
Ultimately, this initiative contributes to a healthier, more informed, and connected community that can work together to overcome the challenges posed by COVID-19 while promoting public health and safety.
