On Monday, 5 September 2022, the Refugee Resource Hub officially opened its doors in Thomas Street, Dandenong, marking a new chapter in the support of local people seeking asylum and refugees in Melbourne’s south-east. Powered by the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC), the Hub provides a welcoming and supportive environment for those navigating the challenges of resettlement in Australia.
The bright yellow building stands out in the community, symbolizing hope and resilience. Inside, the Hub offers a space filled with positive energy, where individuals and families seeking asylum or refuge can access a wide range of essential services. From legal assistance and mental health support to housing advice, the Hub caters to the diverse needs of the local refugee and asylum seeker community, empowering them with the resources necessary to rebuild their lives in Australia.
Founded by Kon Karapanagiotidis OAM, the ASRC has a long history of advocating for the rights of people seeking asylum. Originally established 21 years ago as a small TAFE project focusing on food security, the ASRC quickly expanded its reach in response to the increasing demands for comprehensive support services. Today, it stands as a critical resource for refugees and asylum seekers, offering vital services that address both immediate and long-term needs.
