As part of its commitment to policy and advocacy, the Centre for Migrant and Refugee Health collaborates with ‘Back Your Neighbour’ to support our neighbours, friends, and local communities. Together with The Hon Tony Burke MP, Minister for Immigration and Multicultural Affairs, we urge the Federal Government to address critical issues affecting people seeking asylum in Australia.
Key Advocacy Priorities:
- Grant Work, Travel, and Study Rights to everyone with a valid visa.
- Expand and Simplify Access to SRSS (Status Resolution Support Services), enabling those in need to receive essential healthcare, disability, housing, and other supports.
- Ensure a Fair and Independent Review Process for all humanitarian applications.
- Provide Equitable Review Processes for individuals impacted by the ‘Fast Track’ system with negative refugee determinations.
- Clear the Backlog of asylum applications and appeals with dedicated resources.
- Abolish Temporary Visas and introduce permanent protection visas with pathways to citizenship for all humanitarian arrivals.
Why This Matters
Currently, Australia denies a timely and equitable process for people seeking asylum, leaving many in uncertainty for over a decade. This limbo prevents individuals from achieving the stability they need and deserve, forcing them to rely on unfunded charity and local government support for survival.
Access to basic needs—healthcare, housing, education, and emergency support—is a fundamental right, and the Federal Government has a duty to uphold this for all individuals seeking asylum.
We Need Action Now
Australians have a long tradition of supporting each other in difficult times. By standing together, we can create a compassionate and inclusive community where everyone is respected and supported.
